The Best Thing You Can Do With Ripe Bananas

The Best Thing You Can Do With Ripe Bananas

The Best Thing You Can Do With Ripe Bananas

Do you want to know my secret for never throwing away ripe bananas?

It’s effortless! Today I’m going to show you how you can keep your ripe bananas and your money from going in the trash.

When your bananas reach the point of no return, you know when they’re mostly brown instead of yellow. I either plan to bake something with them right away or I freeze them.

I know! it’s not rocket science.

All I do is peel the bananas, break them into thirds, and put them into a freezer-safe bag or container. Think, gallon size.

I do this weekly with the bananas that didn’t get eaten. They never go to waste because I use the frozen bananas for smoothies, for baking, and other recipes. If you want to bake with them, all you need to do is portion out the frozen bananas and lightly defrost them or leave them out to thaw. If the recipe calls for two bananas, then I portion out about six pieces of frozen banana.

Watch the video up top where I show you the exact steps for freezing your bananas, so they never go to waste, plus a bonus tip for how to freeze your bananas, so they don’t stick together.

Let me know in the comments if you’re going to try this.

And, when you’re ready to use your frozen bananas, you’ll want to make this banana mylkshake smoothie. Or bake something warm and comforting like this gluten-free banana bread.

[WFH] Self Care at it’s Best!

Warning! You’re going to want to try this.

It’s the latest and greatest of quarantine self-care. It’s taking 20-25 minutes for yourself and tackling two things at once. I call it, Mask and Medi!

Here’s how you do it:

Step 1

Apply your favorite detox mask or hydrating mask. In my case, I chose beautycounter kaolin clay mask with activated charcoal.

Step 2

Find a quiet, comfortable place to sit. Turn on your favorite meditation app like insight timer or headspace and start your deep breathing or your mantra or follow the apps guidance. Meditate, quiet your mind, and relax, until your mask is completely dry—about 10 minutes or so.

Step 3

Remove your mask and take a selfie and tag me @wellthymel, because you’ll be glowing from the inside out. Who’s going to try this?

Drop a comment or shoot me an email if you want me to send you a sample of my charcoal face mask so you can try this yourself?

The charcoal mask doesn’t contain any parabens or PEG’s and its good for absorbing excess oil, minimizing pores, clarifying the complexion, and helping calm, refine, and smooth skin. 👍🏼

Do you know what’s lurking in your skincare?

7 Practical Tips to Waste Less Food

7 Practical Tips to Waste Less Food

7 Practical Tips to Waste Less Food

Food waste is a problem for several reasons, and we can take small steps each day to do our part in lessening that number.

According to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), 38.1 million tons of food waste was created in 2017. it’s hard even to imagine how much 1 ton of food is, but 38.1 tons is unfathomable.

In a slowed economy there isn’t a doubt that we’re at home cooking more meals. While that’s true, it’s also why it’s so important to make your purchases count.

Instead of throwing away your hard-earned money on food you didn’t eat, and contributing to the methane emissions and adding to your carbon footprint. Food waste will inevitably happen, but there are several helpful tips to keep it at a minimum. Try these 7 practical tips  to waste less food and be better for yourself and the environment in the process.

1. Plan your meals

This might be obvious, but the key factor so many of us forget when planning our weekly shopping list is how many times we’ll use the ingredients called for in a recipe. Putting quantities on your list helps you avoid buying too much. It also will save you extra trips to the store when you realize you didn’t buy enough.

2. Check your stash first

Ever run to the store to get more of a particular item, only to find you had plenty of it? With packaged goods like pasta, it’s not a big deal, but with things that have a shelf life, you wind up wasting more food. Look in your cabinets and fridge first. Some ingredients might not be obvious as to what you can use them for, so Google them, and you’ll be amazed at the recipes you can come up with using what you have on-hand.

3. Don’t bulk buy unless you’re using it all

Bulk buying is useful for certain things, like toilet paper. If you have a large family, buying in bulk does help a lot in some instances with certain products. But buying bulk just to get a good deal? Not always a smart idea. Unless you can freeze it or it won’t expire any time soon, buying bulk might not be the best option. One way you can use bulk to your advantage, though, is to buy in bulk with a neighbor or family member. That way, you can split the cost and split the goods!

4. Organize your food spaces

If you want to stop throwing out money from wasting food, start organizing. Clean out the fridge and keep a habit of putting older stuff in the front, so you remember to use it.

5. Learn how to store food for optimum freshness

There are a few tricks you can learn about maximizing the freshness potential of fruits and vegetables in your fridge. Taking the time to properly store them once you bring them home will go a long way in preventing food waste. For example, berries shouldn’t be washed until you’re ready to eat them, and tomatoes, apples, and bananas can make other produce spoil faster — so keep them separated.

6. Do your meal prep right after shopping

You’re never going to snack on those veggies if you don’t prep them and have them at eye-level in your fridge. On the other hand, you’re much more likely to call for pizza delivery if you don’t have all your ingredients prepped for busy weeknights. Take the time to handle it when you have downtime. It may seem like a chore, but once you get into it, you’ll wind up with more free time to enjoy yourself with and less wasted food. Use this food prep time to listen to your favorite podcasts or a book on audible. Find something that makes you look forward to doing it — and it’ll become a mini-highlight of your week.

7. Give fruits and veggies a second chance

Don’t overlook fruits and veggies past their prime. You can turn brown bananas into banana bread, make soups and stir-fry out of those veggies, and so much more. Even stale bread can become croutons or a superb French toast.

Learning how to make do with what you’ve got will help you cut out the food waste and have more money to spend on you!

I personally enjoy composting my food scraps. It allows us to create less trash and we only put out our trash bin to be collected about once every 6-8 weeks. With recycling and composting we’re reducing our need to create garbage. Can you imagine if we all did this? 🤯

5 Easy Ways to Stay Moving

5 Easy Ways to Stay Moving

5 Easy Ways to Stay Moving

5 Easy Ways to Stay Moving

Let’s face it boo –sometimes, we just don’t have the time or motivation to get our daily exercise done. But the great news is, aside from planned workouts,

we actually burn a good deal of calories from simple regular movements, such as walking.

Here are five ways that you can increase your physical activity by tweaking the daily tasks that you’re already doing.

1. Park further away

Whenever we drive somewhere, we always look for the closest parking spot so that we don’t have to walk far. However, this is a missed opportunity to get some extra steps in (plus, you’ll likely save yourself a lot of stress from not finding an empty spot). Next time you’re parking somewhere, try to go a bit further away from the entrance. These daily steps add up.

2. Make physical activity a social event

Usually, when we catch up with friends, it’s over coffee or a meal. Try integrating physical activity into your social life so that you make it something you look forward to. Instead of going out for dinner, go on a walk together. This way, you can still talk and catch up, but you’ll be moving your body while you do it. You can also do other fun activities together, such as skating, rock climbing, or a fun fitness class. It’s always more fun to exercise when you’re doing it with a friend.

3. Pace when you’re on the phone

All these seemingly little movements throughout the day can add up and contribute a lot to your overall step count and the number of calories that you burn. When you’re texting or talking on the phone, pace back and forth or walk around the house. Over time, it will become a habit, and you won’t even think about it as you do it.

4. Take a bike or walk instead of driving

If you’re going somewhere that’s not too far, try riding your bike or walk there instead of driving or taking a bus. If the destination is too far and you are taking public transit, you can walk to the next station over instead of the one closest to you and get off a few stops early to walk the rest of the way.

5. Get up when you’re sitting

If you have an office job or are working at your desk all day, you are probably spending the majority of your day sitting down, which can be unhealthy and especially bad for your posture. Take advantage of your lunch break, and take a quick stroll. Get some fresh air. Even throughout your working hours, remember to get up off your chair and even just walk to the bathroom or end of the hallway every so often. You can also do some of your work standing up, when at all possible. If you work from home, consider getting a standing or height-adjustable desk, or sit on a medicine ball instead of a chair.

Which one of these tips do you use already? Leave a comment with how you’ll be more intentional with some of these tips?

How to Bounce Back When You’ve Gone Off Track

How to Bounce Back When You’ve Gone Off Track

How to Bounce Back When You’ve Gone Off Track

You may have started the year off with lofty goals and dreams for the new year ahead.

No matter how enthusiastic we are on January 1st, things often don’t work out quite as planned when it comes to Resolutions. That’s to be expected and totally okay!  I want to share with you some ways to help you bounce back, instead of ditching your plan altogether.

1. Allow yourself to process your emotions

If you feel like you’ve let yourself or others down, give yourself some time to really process how you’re feeling. If you’re angry, sad, or frustrated, allow yourself to feel those emotions and try to understand precisely what is causing you to feel this way. Take time to think about why you might be feeling so upset with yourself. Write your feelings in a journal or self-reflect in whatever way works for you. Have you made these mistakes time and time again, or have you felt disappointed in somebody else for making a similar mistake? There might be an underlying reason for your emotions, and they’re worth digging in to.

2. Talk to someone about how you’re feeling

Call a friend or a loved one and tell them your situation and how you’re feeling. This can be extremely therapeutic and can often leave you feeling like a huge weight is lifted off your shoulders. We all make mistakes. A loved one can remind you of this and help you realize that the situation is probably not as bad or permanent as you may think it is. Even if they don’t offer any advice, it can be helpful just to tell someone what’s going on.

3. Don’t allow this situation to define you

We really are our own harshest critics. Nobody is perfect. Do not let your mistakes define who you are. Try to be kinder to yourself while you process your emotions and try not to speak negatively about yourself as a person. While you might be searching for forgiveness from others, try to work on forgiving yourself as well.

4. Learn from your mistakes

The best thing you can do from any negative situation is to take a lesson from it. Learn what went wrong and try to understand why you did (or didn’t do) something. This way, the same mistake doesn’t have to happen again and leave you feeling so disappointed in yourself. If you learned something from it, then the situation is not all bad.

5. Allow this situation to make you a stronger and better person

If you can learn from your slips, you can grow as a person. Often the most difficult and challenging times are the ones that shape us and help us improve. It doesn’t matter whether you are disappointed in yourself because of finances, relationships, work, or failing at personal goals— if you can find a way to improve, you will come out better. Your situation might even help you see the world differently. Perhaps you can learn to become more compassionate or forgiving of other people in your life who make mistakes.

All of that to say, there’s still plenty of time to reach your goals. We are way too hard on ourselves at times and tend to focus on everything we didn’t “do right.” Imagine what you could do if you foucused more on what you are doing right, like trying.

Remember, If you move off course, take a deep breath, forgive yourself, and re-adjust.

Hit reply and let me know what your goals are for 2020, I’d love to hear what you’re striving for!
